OpenAI: Empire of AI - Mon, Jul 27, 2026

Grounded Discussions

A voracious reader only on the prologue of Karen Hao’s ‘Empire of AI’. Go figure. Before indulging, I must admit, aside from brief testing, I have never really used OpenAI models as a developer or ChatGPT as a consumer.

I tend to go in the opposite direction of hype or rapid mass adoption of anything, but especially tech. Early adoption requires some kind of trade-off because the deliverable is typically incomplete. There are exceptions, of course.

After four years, OpenAI has produced highly ranked capable models that, for some reason, I constantly avoid. The most time spent was researching and writing an article about OpenAI’s recent HuggingFace breach incident.

In particular, the AI journey has been a gradual process. Carefully, using it to build reliable workflows has been sobering in ways only experience can teach. Some would say the jury is still out on if its worth the attention and resources—I haven’t taken the over or under yet. Opinions are cheap when the subject is on trend to become a future commodity.

What I find valuable are grounded discussions about the current state of AI development, peripheral issues at stake, and solid contributions made in a reasonable direction.
